Giovanni Battista Moroni was one of the foremost portrait painters of the 16th century, acclaimed for being able to portray his sitters in remarkably lifelike fashion. The inscription on the column identifies the sitter as Mario Benvenuti, who served in the army of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. By the time this portrait was painted, Benvenuti had completed his military career; he probably commissioned this work to commemorate his service to the emperor.
